About This Course
This course provides a broad introduction to the themes and theologies of pastoral/spiritual care and counseling for caregiving within the contemporary sociohistorical moment. By focusing on the practical theological methodologies of reflection, course participants will have the opportunity to explore the personal, interpersonal, and communal issues that emerge in families, churches, communities, and broader societies. This course will pay particular attention to differences in culture, gender, class, race, nationality, ethnicity, religious tradition, sexualities, gender expressions, and physical abilities that are made manifest through caregiving. This course will highlight several examples of the ways in which caregivers across modalities and vocations offer support in times of crisis and celebration, of joy and sorry, both everyday circumstances and extraordinary events.

Learning Objectives
Contribute to the creation and maintenance of a culture of collaborative learning that is built upon an ethic of working effectively, productively, and respectfully in partnership with others in the class, honoring through respectful interactions the various cultural, religious, racial, age, gender, and other differences present among course members.
Identify and critically analyze pastoral theological quandaries, both in the assigned readings and in the contemporary moments within our lived contexts, inclusive of analyses of culture, sociohistorical realities, and contextual identities.
Analyze the influence of political, cultural, economic, religious/spiritual, and theological contexts on the development of caregiving and demonstrate awareness of the range of differences and similarities among the student’s own contexts and religious/spiritual traditions.
Work effectively in partnership with others in the class by contributing effectively to the group’s success, respecting and learning from colleagues in class, getting work done on time, and responding thoughtfully to the contributions of others in the class.
Assess the outcomes of Case Study proposed actions to provide care in times of emergent need. This includes assessment of Osmer’s methodologies, of pastoral/spiritual caregiving theologies, and of lived realities of communities and contexts and their expressed needs.
