About This Course

This course is one part of nine in the Theological Education for Leadership (TEL) Learning Path for the Congregational Renewal Track offered by PSR. It is one quarter of the full-term course of the same name and is considered the introductory overview of Igniting Vibrant Ventures. This course offers hands-on experiential learning to equip emerging and established leaders for congregational ministry and organizational leadership through social entrepreneurship. It covers church administration, nonprofit management, and startup principles, guiding students to design and implement mission-driven social business models with adaptive strategic tools.

Heesung Hwang

PhD, Associate Professor of United Methodist Studies, Religious Education, and Leadership, Academic Director, Congregational Renewal Cohorts

Rev. Dr. Heesung Hwang is an Associate Professor of United Methodist Studies, Religious Education, and Leadership at the Pacific School of Religion.

Rev. Dr. Heesung Hwang (she/her) is a Christian religious educator and ordained deacon in the United Methodist Church. Her scholarship focuses on anti-racism, Korean American spirituality, and the intersection of theology, pedagogy, and social justice. She holds a PhD in Christian Education and Congregational Studies from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and has taught at theological institutions across the U.S. and abroad.

Dr. Hwang’s book, Reframing Christian Education for a Global Generation, explores Wesleyan theology through the lens of immigrant faith communities. Her ministry has included pastoring, consulting, and curriculum development with Korean American congregations, and she leads mentoring cohorts and projects that uplift the voices of Asian American women scholars and clergy.

Also, as a committed advocate for inclusive, multicultural ministry, Dr. Hwang serves on the board and steering committee of the Religious Education Association.
