God with Us in Our Mental and Emotional Needs

Instructor: Keisha Polonio | Partner: PAX
Learning Pillar:  Contemplative Activism | Rigor Level: Medium

Welcome

This course guides you on an exploration of how we can experience God’s love and presence in our mental health journeys. You will be introduced to common mental health challenges and asked to reflect on your own understanding of this topic and what has influenced your understanding. You will be introduced to the misguiding of the Church, led through a series of statements and guided to the awareness that we are not alone on our mental health journeys. Now, as you enter this course, prepare yourself for the sensitivity of this topic and open yourself to the insights of God and the supportive nature of Jesus.

Introduction to PAX Discussion
This is part of a series of courses each focusing on a key topic that young Christians of color want to know about yet are challenged to find relevant, thoughtful, biblically based resources that answer their questions. We have curated a diverse collection of Jesus centered art, scholarship, and storytelling, primarily created by people of color, that provides teaching, guidance, and opportunities for reflection. Many of the contributors are experts in their field, while others are everyday Christians on their own journey of discovery. Each has a valuable perspective to share on what it means to be a peacemaker and follower of Jesus in today’s world.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, you will:
  1. Understand how God sees our mental health, and how that differs from what we often hear in the church.
  2. Learn how Jesus suffers alongside us and seeks to redeem our mental health struggles.
  3. Gain practical, God-honoring tools and approaches to help care for our own mental health and that of others.
