Assignment | Design Is A Theory Of Change

Reflect on the course video and the following quotes:

"In 2008, philosopher of science and technology Bruno Latour wrote, 'I would argue that design is one of the terms that has replaced the word 'revolution'!' To say that everything has to be designed and redesigned (including nature), we imply something of the sort: 'It will neither be revolutionized, nor will it be modernized...' Designing is the antidote to founding, colonizing, establishing, or breaking with the past."

Then reflect on the question: "In what way exactly has design and design thinking replaced the word 'revolution'?"

Please share your thoughts (approximately 300 words).

Discussion (1)

Revolution means sudden, radical, or complete change, especially in social/political systems. Design and design thinking have replaced the word revolution by asserting and practicing the fact that we are not looking to "improve" on what we have, we are looking to create what has not yet been. We are practicing the cultivation of emergence of something we do not yet even comprehend. We are not making the buttons bigger, we are creating a new way of bringing our intentions for "on" that we do not (yet) know exists.
