Assignment|Building Community through Story Sharing

Reflections: Story Sharing for Building Community

1. Dr. Reyes discussed the power of myths and the "myth gap"--the stories and myths that once held people together but have become fragmented or are no longer resonating the way there were meant to inspire and unify. What is a "myth gap" that you can identify in your own community? What new story might address that gap? How could you be one who brings that story forward?

2. Dr. Reyes observed, "To unlearn is to believe all things are possible...is to be returned to the mind and the curiosity of the child. This curiosity will what will close the purpose gap" and help us build community, bridge divides, pursue justice, and heal the world so that one day it will be characterized by the laughter of all children." What do you need to "unlearn" in order to believe in the possibilities for healing our world? What aspect of your mind and curiosity as a child would you like to recapture for this work?

3. What family stories shaped you? Where there family stories that taught you to love yourself, your history, and/or your traditions? What stories do you share with others to do the same?
